Early Log Scanning & Sorting for Canada's Sawmills

A world of possibilities with global expertise and product optimization. For any market.
Early Log Scanning & Sorting for Canada's Sawmills

Market Changes & Growing Pressure

For decades, Canadian sawmills have been optimized to efficiently produce high volumes of standardized construction lumber for the North American market. In typical mill layouts, logs are measured primarily by dimension and committed to a breakdown strategy designed to deliver standardized dimensional products.

With shifting demand, tighter margins, and increasing market pressure, growing interest in export opportunities is prompting mills to rethink how they remain competitive. The challenge is producing a broader range of products for different markets without sacrificing efficiency.

Early Log Insight and Product Diversification

Often, log quality is not fully understood until after the log has entered the breakdown process. By that point, critical decisions about breakdown and recovery have already been made. Canadian mill layouts don’t typically include log sorting based on quality because, historically, it wasn’t necessary. Producing construction lumber for domestic markets didn’t demand that level of differentiation.

When the need arises to produce more diverse products for export markets, specialty grades, or high-value applications, the lack of early insight can limit opportunities. Quality-based or dimension-based sorting allows logs to be direction to the most suitable breakdown strategy, maximizing value and recovery.

»Having more information about logs through advanced scanning means Canadian mills would no longer be tied to typical domestic products. It means they would be able to look for opportunities in any market and flexibly adapt their production to be able to produce the desired end products. «

Global Experience and Why it Matters

As market conditions evolve, product diversification is becoming a strategic necessity. Export markets often require different grading, appearance, and strength standards than those traditionally used in Canada. Mills that can adapt to these requirements are better positioned to compete globally. Meeting these demands requires a deep understanding of raw material quality and its suitability for diverse specifications. Around the world, mills are already optimizing production for multiple products and grading standards by leveraging early log scanning and sorting strategies.

With installations supporting markets across Europe, Oceania, and Japan, MiCROTEC’s technology, such as the Logeye multi-sensor quality scanner, is built on real-world applications and close collaboration with customers producing for diverse global markets.

This approach enables mills to better understand their raw material and optimize breakdown strategies to expand product potential. When log quality is known before breakdown, a world of possibilities opens up.
